Why “Slow and Steady” Wins the Coaching Race (Especially in 2024)

Josh Dykes

Do you remember learning to walk as a toddler? Probably not. Yet, those wobbly first steps, the encouraging cheers of loved ones, laid the foundation for every journey you’ve taken since. Sadly, as adults, we often forget the power of those gradual triumphs when facing new challenges… like building a thriving coaching business.

In the fast-paced, “hustle-harder” world we live in, it’s easy to believe that success demands overnight miracles. We see others seemingly launching into six-figure businesses overnight, and a nagging voice whispers, “What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I keep up?”

This is where the “walk before you run” philosophy comes into play, and in 2024, it’s more relevant than ever for the heart-centered coach. Here’s why:

  • Burnout is the Enemy: When we jump into the deep end of entrepreneurship without adequate preparation, burnout is almost inevitable. Sustainable success requires laying a solid foundation, step by step.
  • Niche Clarity Takes Time: Understanding your ideal client and messaging with laser focus doesn’t happen magically. Early wins give you the data and real-life experience to refine your offer and attract a deeply loyal clientele.
  • Authenticity Shines Through: When you rush, you present a polished facade, not the true soul of your coaching. Slowing down allows your passion, expertise, and unique personality to emerge– qualities that create the most powerful client connection.

My own coaching journey wasn’t linear. I started full of enthusiasm, then hit a wall of self-doubt when results didn’t materialise instantly. It was tempting to abandon the dream, to tell myself that those who “made it” simply possessed something special I lacked.

But here’s the shift that changed everything: instead of chasing the grand goal of a full client roster, I asked myself, “What is the smallest, most achievable step I can take today?” Sometimes, that meant crafting a single social media post. Other days, it was reaching out for a single discovery call or running one event.

Slowly, those small steps grew into a sustainable rhythm. Testimonials trickled in, which I celebrated like major victories. My confidence deepened with each client breakthrough. And guess what? Suddenly, without forcing it, my business was blossoming.

Lessons for the 2024 Coach:

  • Celebrate the Tiny Wins: Every completed task, every client inquiry, every ‘aha’ moment is a reason for genuine joy. These small triumphs fuel your momentum for the long haul.
  • Community Over Competition: Building genuine relationships with fellow coaches provides invaluable support. Learn from those a few paces ahead, and generously share your own insights with others.
  • Progress, Not Perfection: Embrace the messy, imperfect nature of building a business. Done is better than perfect, and each ‘mistake’ is an opportunity to learn something invaluable.

“Walking before you run” isn’t about settling for mediocrity. It’s about respecting the journey, building resilience, and creating a coaching business that’s both fulfilling and sustainable – one grounded step at a time.
